Just
across the street from one of the area’s biggest malls is Big Cat Rescue,
the world’s largest non-profit accredited sanctuary for big cats. These
exotic cats have found a safe and beautiful sanctuary at Big Cat Rescue
which is tucked away on 45 acres across the street from Citrus Park’s
Westfield Town Center. It is home to over 100 tigers, lions, leopards,
cougars, bobcats, lynx, ocelots, servals, caracals and more. Sixteen of the
35 species of wild cats, many of which are endangered or extinct in the
wild, live at the sanctuary. Some of these cats have been abandoned and
some have been abused. Others are retired from circus acts and others have
been saved from being slaughtered for their fur.
Big Cat Rescue is an educational sanctuary, with a dual mission to (1)
give the cats the best permanent home possible while (2) educating the
public in order to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of
abandonment and/or abuse, and to encourage preservation of habitat and
wildlife. This goal is achieved through educational guided tours, education
programs for young people, and by maintaining a website (www.BigCatRescue.org)
that is the world’s largest and best resource for information about exotic
cats.
The New York Times, Glamour Magazine, Animal Planet, Oprah, Geraldo at
Large, Dateline, Today Show, People Magazine, and Sports Illustrated have
all featured stories on Big Cat Rescue. We are fortunate to have this world
renowned facility right here in Tampa.
The sanctuary receives no government funding and relies on the generosity
of thousands of individual donors and volunteers to care for and support the
cats. Many opportunities are available to volunteer at Big Cat Rescue. In
fact, 107 local people are volunteers and many more around the globe
volunteer as AdvoCats. For more information on volunteer opportunities
please visit the website.
Big
Cat Rescue is open to the public Monday through Saturday for guided tours
conducted by educated and friendly volunteers, all of whom work tirelessly
on behalf of the cats. You’ll get to see the cats up close! Adult Day
Tours ($22 per person) for ages 10 and older are offered Monday through
Friday at 9am or 3pm, and on Saturdays at 9:30, 11:30 and 1:30, and last
about an hour and a half. A Family Tour ($12 per person) is offered on
Saturdays at 9am, and is the only tour permitted for children under age 10
along with their family. It is about an hour long, and is geared towards
children’s interest. These tours do not require advance reservations, but
do plan to arrive about 15 minutes prior to the scheduled tour.
After the tour, you’ll want to visit the fantastic Gift Shop with many
animal-themed items at very reasonable prices. And the best news is—all the
proceeds including the admission price goes towards the care of the cats.
What a wonderful way to spend a few hours. It’s fun, educational, and for a
very good cause, so take the family and go on over for a tour.
Please check the website

for the other tours such as Expedition, Feeding Tour, Photo Tour, Night
Tours, Private Tours, Weddings, and Parties. These do need advance

Cypress
Gardens - Cypress Gardens started
with a dream in a old Cypress swamp in the early 1930's. When Dick Pope
Sr. started carving a garden out of the swamp, little did he realize he
was creating one of the most famous gardens in the world. And 70
years later, it still stands as a vision of natural beauty and
testimony to the strength of a dream fueled by perseverance and hard
work. The original 35 acres is still guarded by the 70 year old
Banyan tree, planted by Dick Pope Sr. himself.

Plant City, Florida
Plant City has a rich history
dating back to the mid-1800's when settlers first began to populate Florida.
Plant City was incorporated in 1885, 16 years after the state was chartered.
Plant City derives its name not from the surrounding agricultural industry
which greatly added to the city's growth, but from Henry Bradley Plant. The
city has grown over the past 110 years to its present size of 26 square
miles. Plant City is located in the heart of Central Florida situated in the
northeastern corner of Hillsborough County.
Plant City's
original name was Ichepucksassa after the Indian village that once occupied
this territory. So much confusion was created with the spelling and
pronunciation that the Irish postmaster renamed the village Cork, after his
home city. In 1884 Henry B. Plant extended the South Florida Railroad into
the town and one year later, when the town was incorporated, it was once
again renamed in honor of Henry B. Plant.
Originally Plant
City was a large cotton center. Changing its major crop to strawberries has
brought it national recognition. Today, over three-quarters of the nation's
midwinter strawberries come from Plant City. At the Strawberry Festival, held
each winter, you can taste some of the finest shortcake, pie and cobblers
made from the freshest strawberries in the land.

the history of Plant City is available at the

Bok Tower is located on Iron Mountain, one of
the highest points of peninsular Florida, estimated to be 295 feet (90 m) above
sea level. April 19, 1993 Bok Tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a

History Of Hillsborough County and
Courthouse
Hillsborough County was formed in
1834 and named for Hillsborough River and Bay, the latter better known as
Tampa Bay even before the days of its modern Buccaneers. The Earl of
Hillsborough was secretary of state for colonies during the brief British
occupation of Florida. The county seat is Tampa, which grew up around Seminole
War-era Ft. Brooke. As with many aboriginal names, the origin is obscure. One
appropriate possibility is "many fires," given Tampa's more modern nickname
"Cigar City."
is the
oldest community service service organization in the area, with it's charter
dating back to 1954. This rich history contributes to the spirit that
remains with the Club today. A spirit combining service contribution to the
local and global community with social interaction among peoples with
similar interests and objectives. While the Brandon Lions Club has many
services and activities, its primary focus is assisting those in need
relating to sight conservation, prevention of blindness and dealing
successfully with the loss of sight.

Biff-Burger Drive-Ins In St. Petersburg, Florida
The National
Biff-Burger Franchises and hundreds of Biff-Burger Drive-Ins across the
country disappeared into history during the '70s and '80s. One Biff-Burger
still remains, which still bears the original name, sign, and multicolored
"Port-A-Unit" building with canopy overhang, still survives today in St.
Petersburg, Florida.
The Biff-Burger, in St. Petersburg, Florida, has
had several owners over the years, but remains nearly as it was during the
late 1950's. This place is a step back into the 50's and early '60s and
offers an unique experience that is hard to beat at any other present-day
burger establishment.
The only difference from the early days, is that the
menu is larger with allot to offer a hunger traveler. The Menu items, at
reasonable prices, include: burgers done regular style with cheese, bacon,
and/or chili, 14 styles of "huge" charbroiled gourmet burgers (strongly
recommended by many), fish, barbecue beef, wings, hot dogs, shakes, and much
more than you can elsewhere. Did I mention the special sauce?
