Florida's Oldest Public Library
Walton DeFuniak Public Library
Opened on December 20, 1887, this library is believed to be the state's oldest
public library operating continuously in its original building in the town of
De Funiak Springs. It has some
rare books as old as the library itself.
The community originated in the early 1880's
as a station on the new Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad. The town was named for
Frederick de Funiak, president of the P&A Railroad, a subsidiary of the
Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
Railroad officials promoted the development
of the communities recreation. In the mid-1880's, representatives of the
widely popular Chautauqua association, an adult education movement combining
education with religion and recreation, selected De Funiak Springs as the Florida
assembly grounds site. In 1885, the first annual session of the Florida
Chautauqua Association was held here. The community seen the need for a
public library. In 1886, an "Aid Society" was
formed which the next year became the "Ladies Library Association."
By the end
of 1887, the De Funiak Library building was completed. The library building is
believed to be the
oldest
structure in Florida built as a library and still serving that purpose.

For God and Country!
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
(II Chronicles 7:14)
